Sława – it is located on the border of Dolny Śląsk and Wielkopolska, on the banks of a big and beautiful lake and its origin can be traced back to the Middle Ages. The commune, as far as its territory is concerned (326 km²), belongs to the greatest communes in the Lubuskie province.
The city of Sława is located by the Sławskie lake and presently is one of the most dynamically developing cities in the Lubuskie province. The greatest treasure of Sława is its nature and its tourist beauty.
The Sławskie lake is also called the Salisian sea because during the foggy autumn mornings it seems to have no end… The lake covers the territory of 854, 67 ha and is the biggest water reservoir in the south west Poland. Together with other nine lakes, it is situated in the macroregion of the Sławskie Lakeland. The lake looks differently in every season of the year and it always attracts with its beauty, size and charm…On the border line there are numerous bays, peninsulas and islands. In the territory of the commune there are about 40 tourist centers representing a variety of standards, numerous camping grounds and yacht clubs. All the centers offer a wide diversity of tourist - recreational services.
Sława is almost 700 years old and its history dates back to the year 1312 when it was granted city rights. To this day the city has preserved its medieval spatial layout. In the market square there is situated a branch church from the 19th century (a former evangelical church) and a late – renaissance parish church is located on the outskirts of the city park which connects the lake with the city. In the park there is the greatest agglomeration of the common ivy in the west Poland and the thickest specimen of the black pine (pinus nigra). The half of the commune’s territory is made up of pine woods which, in connection with the numerous lakes, create a conducive microclimate.
For 11 years, Sława has organized triathlon competitions. Swimming, cycling and cross country running – these are the categories which make up the discipline. In the previous year Sława also organized the 47th European Caravaning Europa Rally and in the year 2010 it will organize the 1st Central European Caravaning Rally.
The days od Sława - which is the festiwal of the city - is a great spectacle. They always take place at the first weekend of August under the motto: “Summer without borders”. During these days they come to the city the stars of Polish music scene, to name some: Myslovitz, IRA, Mezo, Kasia Wilk, Kombii. From one year to another this event enjoys a greater popularity. It is worth mentioning here that in Sława on the New Market there is situated the first in Poland Blues Stars Lane. It was built in connection with the Polish Blues Festival “The Wood, Water and Blues” which has been taking place for a few years in Radzyń. In the Stars Lane there made an impact such stars as, to name some: Magda Piskorczyk and Sławek Wierzcholski from the Blues’s Night Shift.
For people who are tired with work, daily life and noise, Sława is an ideal place which guarantees rest. People who like water sports can do windsurfing and yachting here, to name a few. Every year, by the lake, there are organized International Regatta and Yacht Competitions. The Sławskie Lake is an ideal place for sailors! In the year 2008 there was organized here the Polish Cup Regatta in the Omega class.
Anglers also find here something for themselves. All the waters of the district belong to the silence zone, hence you can pleasantly spend time here and at least for a moment feel the true breath of nature…During the winter you can take part in iceboat races and in ice - skating competitions. Tourists who do not like water are encouraged to take part in a bicycle excursion or in a walking excursion in the clean and very attractive surrounding. In the territory of the commune there is the green trail, the yellow trail and two natural – forest paths. In the vicinity of Sława (in Lubiatowo) there is a horse path (The Two Loops’ Horse Path) and a ranch for those who want a horse - riding vacation.
The picturesque city by the great Sławskie Lake, surrounded by woods as well as the amazing and specific climate of Sława make the people who have once visited the city and the surroundings want to come back…and again knock on the gates of this very charming corner.
